Summary

In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood's most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence。 As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family。 This is the untold story of the exotic tactics of surveillance and intimidation deployed by wealthy and connected men to threaten journalists, evade accountability, and silence victims of abuse。 And it's the story of the women who risked everything to expose the truth and spark a global movement。

I almost gave up on this one because it was a little confusing at first and the story is so unsettling。 But I'm glad I stuck with it。 It's a collection of stories that need to be told。 And then told some more。 Abuse and predatory behavior must be exposed and stopped。 I almost gave up on this one because it was a little confusing at first and the story is so unsettling。 But I'm glad I stuck with it。 It's a collection of stories that need to be told。 And then told some more。 Abuse and predatory behavior must be exposed and stopped。 。。。more

What a fantastic piece of investigative journalism。 It was thrilling, shocking, emotional, riveting。。 the list goes on and on。 Everybody should read this book, even though it is heartbreaking and terrifying。 I cannot recommend it enough!

An important book, and one worth reading, but also one that could be told in half the pages。 The last third of the book discusses men other than Weinstein, and it feels disjointed。 However, it was still very informative and an easy read。 Farrow is clearly an excellent journalist who prioritizes finding and exposing the truth above all else。

This is a really hard book to review, not because it isn't brilliant, but because it is so traumatic This is a book that will make you hate men, at least powerful, media and Hollywood men and their lawyers and sycophants 。 And it will make you hate some women - women who work for these men or organizations hired by these men to attack and besmirch the victims。 Women who will prove out every nasty thing said about women in power。 Women like Lisa Bloom & Hillary Clinton。 Women who act as investiga This is a really hard book to review, not because it isn't brilliant, but because it is so traumatic This is a book that will make you hate men, at least powerful, media and Hollywood men and their lawyers and sycophants 。 And it will make you hate some women - women who work for these men or organizations hired by these men to attack and besmirch the victims。 Women who will prove out every nasty thing said about women in power。 Women like Lisa Bloom & Hillary Clinton。 Women who act as investigators and spies for these men。 Women who are forced to serve as beards for meetings that turn into rapes and walk away and say "what could I do" It also drags into the light the corruption of the powerful where the police are forced to ignore evidence and walk away because the DA says they can't file。 The main villain is Harvey Weinstein and he is simply vile。 The book recounts decades of his abuse on various women and how no one would do anything。 And also Matt Lauer who is a total monster who simply needs a double tap。 but the tentacles of the story go so much wider and deeper。 We learn how some reporters and media would buy up people's stories and then bury them。 Holding the rights to the story so the victim could never tell anyone else。 And the lawyers; some whose names you would recognize crafted NDAs that were so onerous it seems impossible that they were actually legal。 I don't understand how an NDA can be used to disguise an actual crime? Our legal system is f-ed up。Lastly the accounts the victims shared were so awful that they gave me nightmares。 。。。more

Interesting stuff, but I knew a lot of it already。 Ronan is an amazing chap, and there are some great parts, but it is a bit incoherent in places as well。 References to Lovett were good for a laugh。

This book reminds me to be scared of men。 Or rich and powerful men。 Super thorough, great insight, TONS of people whose names were hard to keep track of。

this is gonna sound kinda cringey but like these stories have been written down but will continue for the women’s who’s stories have been told and for those that have not

3。5 ⭐️ - this book is disgusting in that the horrible things powerful people can get away with was prevalent for so long。 I think the most horrible discovery to me was how much NBC tried to cover everything up。 It definitely calls into question the integrity of all the news we consume, both sides, all leanings。 I hope we can have more reporters who are unrelenting when a story needs to be told。 The only thing that brought my rating a bit down was that the story got a bit long at the end - the sp 3。5 ⭐️ - this book is disgusting in that the horrible things powerful people can get away with was prevalent for so long。 I think the most horrible discovery to me was how much NBC tried to cover everything up。 It definitely calls into question the integrity of all the news we consume, both sides, all leanings。 I hope we can have more reporters who are unrelenting when a story needs to be told。 The only thing that brought my rating a bit down was that the story got a bit long at the end - the spies! Great book if you want more insight into the Harvey Weinstein behind the scenes!

There is a trigger warning at the beginning of this book for a reason。 Some of it could be tough to hear/read so use your own discretion。 That being said, the stories of what happened to these women in the workplace and under the authority of men in power is just another horrible sadness in our world。 I think the book did a great job of speaking out for them, and hopefully opened the eyes of many of the people who may read it。

Wow。 Ridiculous how this story unfolded。 Very captivating story and well-written。

Kristin

Well written, detailed story of how the Harvey Weinstein and (subsequently) Matt Lauer scandals were uncovered and reported。 A must read。

We listened to the audiobook on a road trip。 It wasn’t an easy listening as there are lots of disturbing scenes about sexual assault。 Ronan handled it with care。 He also narrated it and did voices。 Most of it was fun, a few times his accents were a bit distracting from the seriousness of the subject matter。 It is such an unbelievable story (that of course I believe)。 How a couple men had this much power is shocking。 I’m glad this story was uncovered。

A brave retelling of the events as they took place when Hollywood's top producer Harvey Weinstein was exposed as a rapist and sexual predator。 Farrow starts from his beginnings as a journalist and also does not shy away from addressing his family connections and sister's legal battle。This book opened up my eyes about how long it takes to build a strong case against powerful figures。 Farrow worked for years on the story and had to fight tooth and nail with his superiors to get it published。 Not o A brave retelling of the events as they took place when Hollywood's top producer Harvey Weinstein was exposed as a rapist and sexual predator。 Farrow starts from his beginnings as a journalist and also does not shy away from addressing his family connections and sister's legal battle。This book opened up my eyes about how long it takes to build a strong case against powerful figures。 Farrow worked for years on the story and had to fight tooth and nail with his superiors to get it published。 Not only that he was threatened, followed and spied on by intelligence organizations from Israel。 Through this book, Farrow has shed light on every perpetrator that played a role in killing the story。 And for that he deserves all the praise。As an audiobook, I did not enjoy this a lot even though Ronan seemed to try his best with all the accents and dramatic reenactment。 。。。more

i loved this book so much and on so many levels。 proof non fiction can be entertaining and even funny at times obv the content of this book and the stories are the most important part of it and i think all of the stories were just told in a very good way? idk how to explain it but all of the women who came forward were some of the bravest people i’ve ever read about and i need to buy a copy of this book soon as a survivor of assault myself i really needed this

Major props to Ronan Farrow (and Rich McHugh and others involved) for not only the investigative work that went into this, but also for pursuing it so doggedly and doing whatever it took to get the story out into the world - despite the immense push-back from corrupted higher-ups at NBC and the threats to their own personal safety。 Farrow does a good job explaining just how far and deep the corrupt roots of those in power reach throughout the media industry。 At times, it almost felt unreal - how Major props to Ronan Farrow (and Rich McHugh and others involved) for not only the investigative work that went into this, but also for pursuing it so doggedly and doing whatever it took to get the story out into the world - despite the immense push-back from corrupted higher-ups at NBC and the threats to their own personal safety。 Farrow does a good job explaining just how far and deep the corrupt roots of those in power reach throughout the media industry。 At times, it almost felt unreal - how and why were so many people aware of Weinstein's predatory acts, yet willing to turn a blind eye? As Farrow also mentions, it's not just Weinstein, but also others such as Matt Lauer who are perpetrators。 Behind all the glitz and glamour of the on-screen and photographed personalities is a shadowy world。 Kudos to the many brave women who stepped forward with their personal stories as well。There were a few times when I had a hard time following what exactly was going on or how certain segments related to the story (so many names to keep track of) - but perhaps that simply reflects how complex this all is, rather than the author's writing style。 Overall, I recommend reading/listening to this。 It's at times shocking and horrifying, but these women's voices deserve to be heard far and wide and we as a society need to take action to do more to prevent these kinds of things from happening again。 。。。more

Incredible story and worth the read but Ronan is incredibly verbose and gets into lots of minutia that isn’t necessary and unnecessarily lengthens the book。

Okay, this book is making me contemplate going to law school if that is the only avenue available to do something as great as what Farrow did。 The book was a grippingly realistic depiction of the hardships Farrow and his colleagues faced in attempting to expose Weinstein and his culture of relentless assault。 To think this was really the Genesis of the MeToo Movement and Times Up。 I felt Farrow’s frustration like it was my own, felt his fear like it was my own and felt his triumph like it was my Okay, this book is making me contemplate going to law school if that is the only avenue available to do something as great as what Farrow did。 The book was a grippingly realistic depiction of the hardships Farrow and his colleagues faced in attempting to expose Weinstein and his culture of relentless assault。 To think this was really the Genesis of the MeToo Movement and Times Up。 I felt Farrow’s frustration like it was my own, felt his fear like it was my own and felt his triumph like it was my own。 He did a great thing。 Lastly, the survivors accounts told in the book shall stay with me forever。 As a society we need to do better。 。。。more

This is a piece of outstanding and important reporting, bringing to light the ways men in Hollywood and positions of power get away with heinous crimes。 Please be aware it can get graphic in the descriptions of said crimes; for some people, that will make the book difficult to read。 Unfortunately, Ronan is not one of those rare people who are exceptional reporters AND exceptional writers, so the narrative lags occasionally and becomes repetitive。 Ronan also focuses a little too much on himself a This is a piece of outstanding and important reporting, bringing to light the ways men in Hollywood and positions of power get away with heinous crimes。 Please be aware it can get graphic in the descriptions of said crimes; for some people, that will make the book difficult to read。 Unfortunately, Ronan is not one of those rare people who are exceptional reporters AND exceptional writers, so the narrative lags occasionally and becomes repetitive。 Ronan also focuses a little too much on himself at the centre of the story。 However, the important story he is telling more than makes up for these issues。I listened to the audiobook, which Ronan notoriously narrates himself, including doing impressions of different figures。 This does not go well。 It's funny--and nothing about this book should really be funny。 。。。more

I love when an audiobook is read by the author and this was no exception。 This was fascinating。 It’s not easy to read but so brave of everyone involved in telling the story。 “In the end, the courage of women can’t be stamped out。 And stories—the big ones, the true ones—can be caught but never killed。”

A good summary of how the journalistic investigation of Harvey Weinstein became a criminal case and started a movement。 It parallels the NY Times investigation recounted in the book "She Said。" A good summary of how the journalistic investigation of Harvey Weinstein became a criminal case and started a movement。 It parallels the NY Times investigation recounted in the book "She Said。" 。。。more
